The Challenge

Make the cover look different from last year’s but still in line with their branding guide.

The Solution

First, I needed to research and find out what kind of designs they seemed inclined to pick. I looked over last year’s proposals and paid particular attention to the one they picked from those proposals. I realized they liked clean and simple designs.

NICHD has a rigorous and specific branding guide that tells precisely what you can and can’t do when using their abstract shape. It was clear they liked circles. Their branding guide indicated that the circular element could be repeated to create a pattern. So I decided to use it to make a pattern on the background. Additionally, they said that the individual pieces of the element could be used together or individually. Therefore, I created a circle containing the primary information and then picked one of the half-moon shapes to create my composition. To make it interesting, I made it so that the circle would cut into the spine.
